Module 4 : Editing and publishing

Aim

Learn how to edit images, and publish them on different platforms.

Objectives

  • Learn about the different image formats, especially RAW.
  • Learn to manipulate and enhance through Photoshop.

Tasks

Task 4.1

4.1.1 Watch the video lecture about Adobe Photoshop for photographers at Lynda.com

During the video course you will get an option to do some challenges. If you already know the basics of photoshop, you will not need to do these. But if you are new to the software, it is strongly recommended that you do them. And do not worry, they are all small and simple tasks.

4.1.2 Edit your photography

Use one of your portraits that you have shot in a previous task. In chapter 11 in the photoshop lynda video, you are shown how to separate the subject from a background. Use this technique to separate the subject in your photo, and change the background to something else you like. Be creative, and remember the tips about composition.

Upload image to the hand-in section.

The pictures need to be in jpeg, jpg or png format. Give the filename your name plus task name (example: “StudentName_Task4.1.2.jpg“).

Task 4.2

4.2.1 Read article about panorama photography and watch video lecture “Photoshop CC Essential training (2015)” (Only chapter 15).

4.2.2 Shoot and edit a panorama photo.

In this task you will need to go outside to shoot several pictures and put them together to a panorama picture. Follow the tips in the article linked above, and follow these criterias:

  • Take the pictures in portrait format (tilted camera)
  • Use a tripod
  • Use the same settings in every picture
  • Focal length between 28 – 50mm
  • Camera in manual mode
  • Use RAW format

After the photos have been shot, follow the steps in the video linked above to put the pictures seamlessly together in photoshop.

Upload image to the hand-in section.

Remember to save the image as a jpg or png before handing in.

The pictures need to be in jpeg, jpg or png format. Give the filename your name plus task name (example: “StudentName_Task4.2.2.jpg“).

Task 4.3

4.3.1 Read article about HDR images and watch the video lecture “Working with Raw-Format Photos in Lightroom and Photoshop” (Links to an external site.) at Lynda.com.

Also watch chapter 5 (the ones about photoshop) in the course “Shooting and Processing High Dynamic Range Photographs (HDR) (Links to an external site.)” at Lynda, to learn how you edit a HDR in photoshop.

4.3.2 Learn how to make a HDR image

In this task you are combining several photos with the same subject into one photo. Shoot three photographies with different exposure values and put them together in photoshop as shown in one of the videos above. Remember to

  • Use a tripod
  • Use the same settings in every picture
  • Camera in manual mode
  • Use RAW format

The pictures need to be in jpeg, jpg or png format. Give the filename your name plus task name (example: “StudentName_Task4.3.2.jpg“).

Task 4.4

4.4.1 Use your creativity

In this task you are asked to use whatever source you want, and use your imagination to create something creative.

The only criteria for this task is that you have used photoshop.

Task 4.5

4.5.1 Watch the video lecture “Flickr essential training” at Lynda.com

This video should teach you the basics of Flickr, which is an online community where anyone can publish their photographies.

4.5.2  Create a profile and publish a photography

This is not mandatory, but it is recommended that you do this as a final “exam” for this course. You are now hopefully become a photographer who is conscious about shooting pictures, and the way further now is to publish your photos, so you can continue to get feedback from fellow photographers.
